Dr. Bhuvan Chawla was the first board certified nephrologist in Joliet, Illinois and introduced nephrology to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in 1981.

Dr. Chawla specializes in the diagnosis and management of:

LDL Apheresis
LDL apheresis is a life changing therapy for the treatment of refractory hyperlipidemia. Typical patients have heart disease at an early age and cholesterol levels that do not respond to diet and medication.

FDA guidelines for LDL apheresis:

• LDL cholesterol over 200 with heart disease
• LDL cholesterol over 300 without heart disease

One LDL apheresis treatment lowers LDL cholesterol by 70 - 80 %. The treatment also significantly lowers VLDL, Lp(a), while HDL remains about the same. To maintain levels, treatments are needed every 2 weeks.

Studies have shown the following benefits for patients receiving LDL apheresis:

• Decreased coronary events
• Regression of atherosclerosis
• Improved endothelial function/tissue perfusion

Diabetes Education
